Sony know that EOJ is a huge hit with players, i mean just look at the limited amount of cards on the market and the prices their going for. Sony weren't making huge amounts of money from the cards, so from their point of view that portion of the game was a failure. So they decide to release the game on the PSP, pushing up sales of the new PSP Go and publishing cards over the PSN through digital booster packs.

Think about it lol, being able to play EOJ on the go.

If this is the case then i will be spending most of the work day playing this in the office.

Sony-Erickson does have a new CEO who stated the company will be pursuing smart phones instead of camera/walkman phones. Android seems like a likely OS for the phone, so I would not be suprised to see a Sony-Erickson smart phone with an android OS by Christmas... On top of that, it seems the PSP version is getting balance changes in the form of some new cards which the PS3 version isn't getting. There in lies the problem. If this has indeed been done I can't see them applying the new elements to the PS3 version. They've been very careful thus far to alter very few cards. If they start altering information on a fair percentage of cards things would get very messy as you would end up with a handful of misleading information.

They were probably preconstructed decks that were showing off specific in-game mechanics and very simple strategies to attract Eye of Judgment virgins.

Wow, how did they keep this a secret! I've shamelessly taken the video and put it on my youtube page Surprisingly it wasn't on youtube anywhere yet that I could see. I put my own touch on it, I slow motioned the part where they showed more characters (more cult of mourning? yeah!!) and I zoomed and slow motioned where they showed some of the gameplay and story, since the original video goes by so fast. As far as the "buy new cards from PSN" capability, I think that refers to the ability for Sony to create downloadable expansions similar to what was done on the PS3 version, only on the PSP version you would not have to buy new packs of cards after paying for the expansion download. Instead, you would buy the expansion download and those expansion cards would be added to the list of cards that you could potentially win by playing matches. This is all conjecture on my part, since I haven't seen any further details since the initial announcement, but this would be the preferred arrangement for me. The cost would be closer to a typical video game rather than a physical collectible card game, which would encourage more people to buy in, and as long as there is no ante rule, more people will be encouraged to play online (I know that some people would be scared off of playing online if an ante rule was enforced). New expansions would be similar, priced closer to a video game expansion rather than a physical card game expansion, making it easier for players to keep up with the latest.

Someone please correct me if you know more than I do, but my understanding is that the only money the devs got from making expansions was the money that was spent on the PSN expansion download (which was why we had to pay for the expansion download in addition to physical cards). If this was the case, then cutting out the physical card portion of Eye of Judgment should mean cutting out the cost of buying physical packs of cards, leaving us only with the cost of the PSN download, which is all the devs were seeing money from anyway. In the end, they get the same money per player that they were seeing before, but cut out the large cost to the players of buying physical cards, which undoubtedly was a hindrance to getting more people on board with the game. This should result in more people buying the game, and since they would earn the same amount per sale as before, Eye of Judgment would end up more profitable. I agree with Pinsona. Sony does this to get rid of the physical distribution of cards (which has given them a lot of badwill). If this expansion sells, I think there is a future for this game. The story mode also looks interesting.

This is my biggest concern too. I always thought there was hope for something else happening with EOJ since they never publicly announced that they had dropped support for it. I'm really happy it's been given this second chance and even had 30 new cards added - that is incredibly exciting. However, I have a very strong suspicion the PS3 version is .... toast. All the card purchases will be for nothing. I don't see card prices going anywhere but down and the PS3 version being left completely obsolete.

Totally disagree with this. If they've balanced the PSP version and added cards as well, the PS3 version is left pointless and obsolete. There will be no reason to collect cards at all. If anything the PSP version will drive people from the PS3 to the PSP to play, not vice versa.

Regarding the PocketGamer comments saying it will use the camera to scan cards, I think they're just mis reporting information. The email sent to all the website managers direct from Sony clearly states they're going to a digital model. Difficult to predict the card value issue with this. Could easily go down as they become obsolete or go up due to the interest surge and people wanting a piece of the original concept

If the PSP version of the game is going to have all 310 cards like the PS3 version has, as well as 30 new cards (which could be patch cards), then to me this implies that Sony know that there are problems with the game on the PS3 version.

So unless Sony actually patch the PS3 version of the game, to sort out these problems then i wouldn't be surprised if they faced a lawsuit/lawsuits.

Why would we do that when we can boycott and petition instead LOL, I for one am really thankful that EOJ PSP exists, I'm getting that twitch I get whenever a new set comes out, I need info now!! lol But anyway, Sony likes to toot the interactivity between the PSP and PS3, something I've never taken advantage of since I don't have a PSP yet, but now I'm forced to get one *twitch*. So I would say there should be some way to transfer data from the PS3 to the PSP, such as cards that you own that you've scanned on the PS3 and uploading decks you created on the PS3. So that way hopefully you won't have to repurchase original cards. About the PSP game, i really think that when the it arrives, they'll launch something on the Ps3 too. I mean, it wouldnt make much sense to just ignore the Ps3 version and all its players. We are the ones that keep supporting the game after all, and i want to believe they'll remember that.

I was thinking the same thing as I play alot of MTGO as well... but I just don't see it happenning... mainly because they still print MTG cards, they do not print EOJ cards.... One can hope, but IMO doubtful...

I think It will be all digital, no scanning cards through or imported via the ps3.
because trading cards with friends via ad hoc will make you lose your digital version you achieved by beating opponents.
losing your digital version would make this an actual "trade".
it would be absolute if you could easily keep reimporting the cards via the ps3, that would kill the whole trading idea now wouldn't it?

also I don't think you would have to pay again for the digital form of the 311 excising cards out today.

About the PS3 EOJ.
I am doubting between "if sony will automatically update the PSP content onto the PS3 -EOJ sometime after the PSP release" or "if sony will let it depend on the selling rates of the PSP EOJ in order to see if it is achievable within their marketing budget/skeem to update the PS3-EOJ with the PSP-EOJ content.

for one, sony has been very supportive on mixing the ps3 with the psp with its remote-play. I expect a little feature to be implanted as default.

If they do follow the model of adding new cards to your collection through playing the game, then the possibility of being able to import at least some of your physical card collection through PS3 connectivity seems more feasible, since the individual PSP version cards would not have a monetary value associated with them (Sony would not lose any money by allowing importation). It would be a similar situation to the code system that was used in the Yu-Gi-Oh Game Boy Advance games. In those games, you could enter a code found on physical cards and the game would add one copy of that card to your collection in game. Konami had no concern financially over what cards you had in your in game collection, so they didn't lose any potential sales by adding this feature, but it was appreciated by people who owned the physical cards and wanted to use their favorites in the video game version. I could see a similar method working here, where PS3 owners could connect the PSP game to their PS3 and import their PS3 collection into the game. To avoid balancing problems in story mode, perhaps this connectivity would only be enabled after you beat story mode, or enabled on a limited basis (beat so many opponents, import X number of cards from your PS3 collection into the PSP game). Allowing some kind of importation would be a nice way to thank the PS3 EoJ players, and it sounds like it would also encourage a few more PS3 players to purchase the PSP version.

For the rumors of using the PSP camera to scan your cards, I first noticed this on Joystiq's post announcing EoJ PSP. They were wondering if you would be able to use the PSP camera to scan in your physical cards, but commenters there took it to mean that you definitely would be using the camera, and then other sites that picked up the news treated that idea as fact, when it was really only brought up in conjecture. While no official source as far as I can tell has mentioned using the PSP camera, and there are logical reasons why it would not be used (it has not been released in the US, and apparently does not work with the PSPGo), I could see it being another option for importing cards, but not a requirement. Adding support for the camera would take some development time though, and I'm not sure how many potential buyers of the PSP game a) have physical EoJ cards, b) have a PSP that is compatible with the camera, and c) have the camera. Something that's bothering me is the amount of negativity coming from some of you regarding the announcement of this game. I've been intrigued by EoJ since I first saw it run in 2007, though only managed to finally afford the PS3 and everything that goes with it a year later, shortly after the advent of Set2. I [i]love[/i] this game and the lack of love it has been getting since Set3 had me just as disheartened as most. We all cried out for something more to look forward to, praying that the brand wouldn't die out slowly over time.

We get out wish... And all some of you do is [b]BITCH[/b].

For God's sake! Most of you have been harping for EoJ to be given a second chance for months now!

Yes, I know it's somewhat stinging to realize that the thousands of dollars poured into the card product may end up going to waste with the advent of the PSP version. I realize it will be even more scathing to be forced to possibly buy the content again in a digital format, stifling resale value. But as irritating as these facets are, the PSP is most likely the most cost-efficient model for EoJ to continue. It means no more overheads on card production and distribution and a much more relaxed vice on accessibility for newbies to the franchise; up until recently, you needed a [i]seven-hundred dollar[/i] (AU) games console just to get started! That's nigh-on ludicrous for most people! Sony might even actually [i]make some money[/i] from it, which is the deciding factor in the support of any product in the world. It's the smartest thing Sony could actually do for us and then some.

If you're stupid enough to boycott the game over something so minor as a digital distribution model (which is what most companies are paving the way for anyway; the success of services like iTunes means that it's here to stay) then you're just throwing away what we've all worked so hard for. If I ever see, meet or greet any EoJ fan who refuses to buy this over these issues, I would gladly smack them one in the gob. Stop with the negativity and buy this game on release date. Otherwise, you are digging the franchise's grave.

Not Sony. Sony probably had a contract to make "X" amount which I am sure they fulfilled.

Doing this the PSP way is allowing SONY full control of the profits and sales of these cards. Doing this as digital boosters if that is how they are going to it would mean 100% profit margin in SONY's pockets. If you were a big corporation would you do it any other way? I would like to be as skeptical as many others thinking that you will get the cards for free but I am not. Lets see, Sony charges for Themes even at $0.99 some costing more why would they give you the cards for free when simple things such as a jpeg or whatever format the screens are in. How I see it happening, I am sure they will allow certain cards that are unlockable as freebies as teasers or for the people that do not plan to invest a single penny more into the game after purchasing a the PSP game. Mmmm ... as a 1st post here on EoJM, this one surely can count.


If SONY marketing is stupid enough to betray its the EoJ fanbase and not give them any means to somehow reuse the ownership of the physical cards of current EoJ-players,
than the game will end up as a complete failure from the start.

The money that might cost to SONY is nothing in compared to the potential gains of releasing new virtual sets later on.
They need to "give" something as to keep the current fanbase on board, and as such have a group of virtual cards buyers from the start.
I am convinced that later on newer players will join and those as well will buy both old and new virtual cards.

But if majority of the current EoJ-players will turn their backs to this PSP-version because of complete lack of compatibility with the PS3 version
and more importantly the cards they bought for it, this will i think be doomed from the start.

Business-case wise this should be a no-brainer ... but unfortunately ... that would just be too easy/obvious i guess.
